Microsoft to launch its own branded Windows 8 tablet?

There's already been tons of speculation and rumors about what Microsoft might be revealing on Monday. As we reported on Thursday, Microsoft has sent out invites to members of the media for what it claims is a major announcement on Monday in Los Angeles. The event comes just two weeks after the company's E3 2012 press event in LA.

The entertainment-based website TheWrap.com claims to have heard via unnamed sources that Microsoft will reveal plans for a "Microsoft-manufactured tablet" at the event, possibly running on Windows RT (also known as Windows 8).

While TheWrap.com claims that this Microsoft tablet was designed to go head-to-head with Apple's iPad. ZDNet.com's Mary Jo Foley speculates that Microsoft could in fact announce a smaller tablet that could compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire.

A number of other PC makers, including Dell and HP, have already announced plans to launch their own Windows 8-based tablets.  However, in Dell and HP's case, they seem to be targeting the business and enterprise markets. It's possible that Microsoft could launch its own branded tablet that's aiming for the consumer market like the iPad and the Kindle Fire.

In any case, we should learn everything on Monday, just two days before Microsoft is also expected to reveal official information about Windows Phone 8.
