Microsoft's announcement of the 12 inch Surface Pro 3 earlier today has already made some people question if the company will continue to offer the older, and smaller, Surface Pro 2. A spokesperson at Microsoft has told TechCrunch that the Surface Pro 2 will still be sold by the company, at least in the near term.
The full statement from the company said, "Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 remain great options and will stay in market at this time.” While it's not a shock that the cheaper Surface 2, running on Windows RT, will remain on sale, the fact is that many people will have yet to purchase the Surface Pro 2 might wait to get the new Pro 3 version.
However, Microsoft's spokesperson did not reply to TechCrunch's question on whether or not the Surface Pro 2 will be getting a price cut. At the moment, the cheapest version of the tablet, with its 64GB SSD and its Intel Core i5 processor, is priced at $899, which is $100 more than the $799 version of the Surface Pro 3 with 64GB of storage and an Intel Core i3 processor.
As we reported earlier, pre-orders for some models of the Surface Pro 3 begin at 12:01 am Eastern time on the Microsoft Store website. Interestingly, the same site shows all but one of the Surface Pro 2 models as "out of stock" with the exception being the 512GB model that's priced at $1,799.
