Minecraft exceeds 10 million sales mark on PC platform

Minecraft was launched in May 2009 as an alpha product by indie PC game designer Marcus "Notch" Persson. The game's graphical looks don't compare to games made by high end game development teams but its sandbox gameplay design slowly gained attention and Minecraft became a cult favorite.

Fast forward to 2013 and Minecraft is now a full blown cultural phenomenon, making Persson a very rich and famous man and enabling him to launch his own studio, Mojang, that is making other games. While Minecraft has expanded its reach to other platforms, such as the Xbox 360, iOS and Android platforms, the PC version is still hugely popular.

Today, Minecraft quietly reached and exceeded the 10 million downloadable sales mark for the PC version, according to stats from the Minecraft website. Even after nearly four years, there are still people who are buying the game on the PC. The stats page shows that over 11,000 copies of the game were sold on the PC side in just the last 24 hours.
