Netatmo's new security camera can identify people, dogs and cars

Netatmo's 'Presence' is an impressive new home security camera unveiled as this year's CES. Boasting the ability to distinguish specific objects, from people to cars and even pets, it aims stand out in the growing home automation sector.

The camera works by using a learning algorithm. After detecting an object, Presence will identify if it is a threat and send a notification to the home owner. Its accompanying app is compatible with iOS, Android, and can also be accessed via the web.

The camera itself includes infra-red technology for low-light conditions and a 'smart' floodlight, to scare off threats or to help the home owner at night. Needing only to be connected to power, the camera connects to the internet via Wi-Fi and primarily records to a microSD card.

Unfortunately no retail price was included in the announcement, however there will notably be no ongoing subscription fee. Many other home security cameras often charge for storage of video recording. Instead, Presence records selected video to the onboard microSD card and is able to transfer video to a server using FTP over Wi-Fi.

The full specs for the security camera are:

  • 4 megapixel camera; recording up to 1080p video
  • 100-degree field of view
  • 50x200x110 mm / 2x8x4.3 in
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4G)
  • MicroSD (up to 32GB)
  • Weatherproof: IP66

  • LED floodlight: 12 W, dimmable

  • IR nightvision: detection up to 15m/50ft

Netatmo Presence is expected to be available sometime in Q3 2016.
