NetMarketShare: Microsoft Edge stagnates even as Windows 10 usage increases

The latest numbers for OS and browser market share from NetMarketShare are hardly surprising. Microsoft's Windows 10 continues its meteoric rise in desktops across the world while Google maintains its reign over other browsers. Similar to last month's reports, this month's stats are a mixed bag for the Redmond giant, as Microsoft Edge failed to grow.

Windows 10 grew almost one percentage point to reach 27.63% at the cost of Windows 7 and Windows XP. Interestingly, Microsoft's free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10 was withdrawn exactly a year ago. At the time, the OS had about 22% of the global market share, but its growth has since slowed.

However, users can still take advantage of a "deliberate" loophole that allowed users with disabilities to upgrade to Windows 10 even after the original offer expired. It allows virtually anyone to get the OS with no checks.

Microsoft Edge, on the other hand, remained sluggish as Chrome's dominance in the market continued. Edge's share remains a meager 5.65% against the Google behemoth's 59.57%, which was followed by Edge's predecessor Internet Explorer with 16.5%. Mozilla Firefox came in third with 12.32% of the market, a 0.3% gain.

Across Windows 10, though, Microsoft seems to be doing well as over 50% of users have now upgraded to the Creators Update. However, its prime browser leaves a lot to be desired. The Redmond company is consistently adding new features, but the state of extensions on Edge is still a huge hurdle that it needs to overcome.
