As usual, Microsoft released a new Edge build to the Canary branch today; after all, it's updated daily. What's interesting though is that it puts the version number at 79.0.278.0, making it the first one to be based on Chromium 79, as spotted by Richard Hay.
Microsoft hasn't released an official changelog regarding what's new in the major update, as it rarely does for Canary releases. It does mean, however, that we'll likely see Edge 79 in next week's Dev update, and we'll learn more about it then. Typically, new Edge Dev builds arrive early in the week, so it shouldn't be too long. This week's arrived yesterday with fixes.
Once Edge 79 is available in both the Canary and Dev branches, we'll likely see Edge 78 finally arrive in the Beta branch. Edge Beta is only updated every six weeks when there's a major update, and ever since the first build was introduced on August 20, it's been on Edge 77. We should be due for a new Edge Beta build in about two weeks.
In the meantime, you can always test out Edge 79 on the Canary branch, which you can download here. It's available for both Windows and macOS. If you find any new features, let us know in the comments.
