Nintendo launched its new Switch console on March 3, and so far, it's been a pretty big hit for the company. Nintendo's latest quarterly earnings report revealed that in its first month of availability - up to March 31 - it sold 2.74 million units, significantly exceeding its predictions of two million sales for the same period.
It's unlikely that Switch sales will remain quite as high in the coming months as during its launch phase, but Nintendo is still projecting healthy sales for its next fiscal year. In fact, it anticipates that by April 2018, it will have sold at least 13 million units.
That puts the Switch on course to potentially match, or even exceed, the lifetime sales of Nintendo's older Wii U within the next twelve months or so. Nintendo sold 13.56 million Wii U consoles since its launch in November 2012, with just 760,000 sales in the last year.
Nintendo also revealed that its more affordable 3DS console is continuing to sell well, with 7.27 million units sold over the past fiscal year, an increase of 7% year-on-year.
