Nintendo will launch with two million Switch consoles for its first month

During the holiday season, Nintendo had a bit of problem when it came to replenishing stock of its coveted NES Classic Edition. The console launched in November and was a huge hit, but many consumers couldn't get their hands on it and still can't even to this day. In order not to repeat the same mistake, Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé has vowed that the company will have two million of its $299.99 Switch consoles ready for its launch.

While two million units sounds like a lot, this will be the total number for the entire world in the first month. Fils-Aimé did not discuss how the stock would be distributed, but if the console proves to be popular, there could be a shortage for quite some time. To put the quantity into perspective, when the Wii launched, Nintendo was manufacturing nearly two million units a month, several months after the launch and it still wasn't enough.

Luckily, for those that are interested, many retailers are offering the ability to pre-order the device. Nintendo's new console will be arriving on store shelves on March 3. If you reside in an area of North America where the Switch Tour will be hosted, you'll have a unique opportunity to get some hands-on time with the console and games prior to its debut on store shelves.
