Nissin's $130 noise-cancelling fork aims to reduce ramen slurp sounds

In a world where noise pollution runs rampant, sometimes we need to take a break from it all. While this is not always possible, there are tools out there that allow us to minimize these surrounding noises. Apparently, this concern of noise pollution has extended into the culinary world, where eating noodles and generating a slurping sound, can be considered taboo to some, while others see it as a form of appreciation to the chef and the flavor. In order to alleviate this problem, Nissin Foods, a company known for its instant noodles in Japan has created a solution.

The newly announced Otohiko is a fork that features technologies that will listen for slurps and mask them with a sound generated by a connected smartphone. It does this by using its internal microphone and producing a sound via an app that counteracts the slurping sound.

The Otohiko will cost ¥14,800 or around $130 USD. Nissin will require that a minimum of 5,000 orders be placed before the company begins production. The site has estimated it will take about three months for the first orders to ship.
