Sales of the Lumia 520 were cited as a big reason for the overall rise in Lumia smartphones.
Nokia announced today that its lineup of Lumia smartphones generated 8.8 million unit sales worldwide in the third calendar quarter of 2013. That's the best sales performance yet for the brand, which sold just 2.9 million Lumia devices for the same period a year ago and 7.4 million units in the second quarter of 2012.
The numbers were part of Nokia's quarterly financial update, which added that sales of Lumia devices in the US came in at 1.4 million units for the quarter. Nokia said the rise in sales was due to the "broadened Lumia product range and strong customer demand, particularly for the Lumia 520." The company also cited high sales of the Nokia 520 in its second quarter 2013 results.
The company sold a total of 55.8 million mobile phones in the last quarter, including its feature devices and Asha phones. Of course, Microsoft is slated to take over Nokia's Devices and Services business sometime in the first quarter of 2014, where it will use Nokia's team members and hardware to create new Windows Phone devices.
Overall, Nokia brought in €5.66 billion ($7.8 billion) in revenue and €118 million ($162 million) in operating profit for the third quarter, which was higher than expected.
