It's been a few months since Nvidia unveiled its RTX line of GPUs featuring real-time ray tracing and a heavy focus on artificial intelligence. At the time, only the desktop cards were announced, so those who prefer laptops were still stuck with the previous generation of graphics cards. Today, the green giant has put an end to the wait, announcing mobile variants of the RTX 2080, 2070, and 2060.
Nvidia didn't provide much in the way of details regarding performance, but it did show off a laptop from MSI with an RTX 2080, which it says is more powerful than a GTX 1080 desktop card, and two times as capable as the PlayStation 4 Pro. It did the same with an RTX 2060 laptop, which is more powerful than a 1070 desktop GPU. The company also says that these laptops can play games like Battlefield V with ray tracing at 60 frames per second.
The mobile RTX cards still support Nvidia's G-Sync, as well as some laptop-specific features, such as WhisperMode for quieter operation when a laptop is plugged in or Nvidia Battery Boost, which promises to double the battery life of your device. Some laptops may also use Nvidia Optimus technology, which also promises double the battery life.
RTX graphics cards are coming to more than 40 laptops in over 100 configurations starting January 29th. Of those laptops, 17 use RTX cards with Max-Q design, allowing for thinner profiles. These include computers from many major manufacturers, including HP, Acer, ASUS, Alienware, and Razer, many of which may be announced later at CES.
Much like with its desktop counterparts, gamers can get a free game when they buy a laptop containing an RTX GPU. Laptops with an RTX 2080 will net you both Anthem and Battlefield V, while the 2070 and 2060 will give you one of the two.
