Office Web Apps update adds more functionality

Anyone keeping up with Microsoft Office news knows about Office Web Apps. With Office 2010, Microsoft has delivered the world a free version of its world dominating office productivity suite via the web browser. Unlike traditional versions of Office, Web Apps live in the cloud and have limited functionality. But thanks to a new update, the Office Apps have now gained more functionality.

The new update brings more functionality to Excel and PowerPoint and the platform is now optimized for IE9. For the Excel updates, Microsoft states:

You can now insert, delete or rename sheets in a workbook within the Excel Web Apps, and use familiar tools like AutoSum and formula assistance to crunch data more efficiently.  Formula assistance in particular is a great addition to the Excel Web App since it gives you online access to frequently-used Excel formulas.

Microsoft also updated the PowerPoint side of the equation too. Microsoft states:

You can now change the design theme of your PowerPoint presentation within the PowerPoint Web App.

While the web applications will not replace the offline version of Microsoft's popular Office software, it does allow limited access to their products. For many, the web applications act as a perfect supplement to the offline productivity suite. For others, it has all the functionality that they need, saving them hundreds on purchasing the Office platform.

The Office web apps have proven to be popular for Microsoft, they have stated that they surpassed 30 million users on their Office Web Apps.
