OnePlus 3 and 3T to (eventually) receive Android P update

OnePlus' track record with seeding updates to its handsets hasn't exactly been stellar. The ill-fated OnePlus 2, released with Android 5.1 (Lollipop) in 2015, never saw an official update beyond Android 6.0, leaving it with a support lifespan of under a year. A similar situation rose with the OnePlus X, the company's smaller, one-off smartphone - though the blame purportedly fell on the Snapdragon 801 chip inside it.

The company appears to be turning over a new leaf, however, as the OnePlus 3 (released in June 2016) and 3T (released in November the same year) will be receiving the upcoming Android P update. Both of these are currently Android 8.0 (Oreo) handsets, and will skip over version 8.1 to Android P. On the company's official forum, a OnePlus representative has stated:

"After internal discussions and evaluation, we have decided to focus our development resources on the Android P project instead of upgrading the device to Android 8.1, so that we can offer more exciting features and improvements for our OnePlus 3 and 3T users."

In addition, he also noted that the OnePlus 6 will receive Android P first, followed by the OnePlus 5/5T, and subsequently the 3/3T. There's no ETA on these updates yet, so stay tuned for more information.
