OnePlus announces the OnePlus 9 series with Hasselblad cameras

Today, OnePlus is announcing the OnePlus 9 series, including the 9 and the 9 Pro. While both handsets have been improved in almost every conceivable way, a big focus is the new cameras, which now have Hasselblad branding on them thanks to the new partnership.

The whole camera system is called the Hasselblad Camera for Mobile, and it's all about color performance. Thanks to the Natural Color Calibration feature from Hasselblad, these phones should take more accurate and natural photos.

Aside from the software side of things, of course, there's the hardware. The main sensor in the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro is the Sony IMX689 and IMX789, respectively, and the main difference between the two is that the one in the OnePlus 9 Pro has optical image stabilization. They're both 48MP, 1/1.43 inches, f/1.8, and have seven lenses.

They both have the same ultra-wide camera, which is a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor that's 1/1.56 inches and had an f/2.2 aperture. This is the same one that's used in the OPPO Find X3 Pro. They also both have a 2MP monochrome sensor. Exclusive to the OnePlus 9 Pro is an eight-megapixel telephoto lens for 3x zoom.

If you thought the screen couldn't get any better than last year's, you're wrong. The OnePlus 9 Pro has Fluid Display 2.0, a 6.7-inch QHD LTPO OLED display with an adaptive refresh rate that can max out at 120Hz, and can go all the way down to 1Hz. This is something that we've seen on smartwatches, and it should offer better battery life. As for the OnePlus 9, it has a 6.55-inch 1080p AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but it's not Fluid Display 2.0.

Naturally, it comes with Warp Charge 65T, and you might recall that OnePlus's super-fast 65W charging debuted last year in the OnePlus 8T, so this is the first time it's showing up in a Pro device from the firm. The OnePlus 9 Pro also comes with crazy-fast 50W wireless charging, called Warp Charge 50 Wireless, and the new wireless charger can charge horizontally and vertically thanks to a second charging coil.

But here's the big news. The OnePlus 9 is getting wireless charging too, even if it's just 15W. You might recall that wireless charging for OnePlus only debuted in the OnePlus 8 Pro, and hasn't been in any other products from the firm.

Finally, let's talk about performance. Both of these handsets include Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 888, including the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System. They also both come with LPDDR5 RAM, which is 1.5x faster than LPDDR4X, and UFS 3.1 storage.

The OnePlus 9 comes in Winter Mist and Astral Black, starting at $729 ($999 CAD) for 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, while the 12GB + 256GB model costs $829 ($1,149 CAD). The Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger costs $69.99 ($99.99 CAD).

Once again, the handsets will be available from T-Mobile, including the OnePlus 9 (8GB + 128GB) in both colors, and the OnePlus 9 Pro (12GB + 256GB) in Morning Mist. They'll also be available from Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H. Pre-orders start on March 26 with availability on April 2.
