OnePlus' CEO confirms that there will be no 8T Pro this year

OnePlus 8 Pro

OnePlus is set to unveil its flagship for the second half of the year, dubbed the OnePlus 8T, next month. Starting with the OnePlus 7 series, the company began offering two variants of each flagship, with the top-tier spot held by the Pro variant, and both got refreshed later in the year. This year, however, there had been rumors that an 8T Pro might not be offered.

Today, OnePlus’ CEO took to the Chinese social network, Weibo, to confirm that there indeed will be no Pro variant of the OnePlus 8T, adding that those that prefer the “Pro-level products” could “continue to choose OnePlus 8 Pro”. The executive also suggests that there was no “room for upgrade”, likely referring to the additions already being planned for the 8T.

Rumors suggest that the OnePlus 8T will house a 120Hz high refresh rate panel, something that was present on the 8 Pro. It is possible that the company is planning to arm the 8T with enough kit to pit it as a viable successor to the entire 8 series. However, it is not clear if features like wireless charging and an IP rating for dust and water resistance will make it to the upcoming device.

As for other specifications, the device is expected to sport top-of-the-line specs including a Snapdragon 865+ SoC, with 8GB or 12GB RAM configurations. The company has also been teasing 65W Warp Charge, bringing impressive charging speeds. As for the cameras, the phone is expected to sport an improved 48MP main camera, joined by a 16MP wide-angle unit, a 5MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.

OnePlus is expected to announce the 8T on October 14. However, there are also murmurs of a budget phone and a smartwatch in the works, so it will be interesting to see what the firm has in store for its October event.
