Our first real look at the unique Android UI for Palm's upcoming handset

Over the past month, we have been hearing more news about the potential return of Palm. While some had hoped that a high-end device would come to market, we now know that it will be something quite different. While the first leaked images of the device weren't all that great, a new render has shown up, giving us a clear look at the phone from all angles.

The phone, which goes by the model number PVG100 or codename Pepito, will have a small 3.3-inch 720p display and will apparently be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 435 processor and 3GB RAM. It will have 32GB of internal storage space and will make use of an 800mAh battery. It will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

What is interesting about the new image is the pattern of the icons seen on the screen. While we saw this on the previous render from last month, at the time, the pattern was only a mock-up. The new render shows off what we should expect from the UI when the phone launches. The interface is quite different from the standard Android setup, which usually groups the icons into a grid, perhaps reminiscent of the app layout found in Windows Mobile 6.5 without the borders. It is unknown at the moment how this interface will function.

If things are still on track, we should expect to see this device on the market by year's end, when it could make its debut on Verizon.
