Pixelmator grosses $1 million from Mac App Store

Less than three weeks after the Mac App Store's launch, Pixelmator's development team have announced their product has already grossed $1 million in sales. Happy customers are also leaving their mark in the review section, averaging 4.5 stars with 275 ratings in the US App Store, 5 stars from 128 ratings in the UK, and 4.5 stars with 129 ratings in Germany.

The team already have plans for future updates. Pixelmator 2.0, scheduled for release later this year, will be free to all who purchase the current version from the Mac App Store. The team have confirmed that 2.0 will be more expensive than the current $29 version, so buying now will save money in the long run. 2.0 will be a Mac App Store exclusive, reinforcing the team's belief in the App Store being the best distribution method on Mac OS X.

While still in its infancy, the Mac App Store has got off to a respectable start. 24 hours after launching, the service had provided more than one million downloads. Big hits like Call of Duty 4 and Sid Meier's Civilization IV have made the jump to the platform, both getting a warm reception in review sections. Services like Intel's AppUp and Google's Chrome Web Store are also bringing the App Store concept to the PC, so it may not be too unrealistic to think that the general consumer will visit an app store for all their future software.
