PlayStation 2 nears broadband phase

A story on Asia Biz Tech today suggests that Sony's Playstation 2 shipped nearly five million units in Q3 of 2001, and certainly more than five million in Q4.

And it also suggests that Sony is well on the way to building broadband access into the boxes, giving it a lead over Microsoft's X-Box and the Nintendo Gamecube.

At the end of last year, the piece says, Sony made some strong alliances with broadband players and to us this suggests a recent visit to Asia by a senior Microsoft suit means that firm is scrabbling round to compete on that level.

Sony's SCE subsidiary has deals with Sun, Macromedia, Realnetworks and a number of other players too, the article says.
