Research firm: Over 1 exabyte of data is now stored in the cloud

Just how much data is actually stored in the cloud? According to a new report from the research firm Nasumi, there is currently over one exabyte worth of files that are currently stored among the many cloud services. Just how much is that? An exabyte is 1,073,741,824 GB. So, In other words: a lot.

Nasuni has also posted an infographic on the state of the cloud service business in 2013 with lots of interesting cloud stats. For example, over 75 percent of the files stored in the cloud are less than 10 MB in size.

Microsoft competes with Amazon and others in the cloud service industry, with Microsoft offering Windows Azure and Amazon with its Amazon Web Services. Today, Nasuni named Windows Azure as the top cloud service provider. The achievement is even more interesting because Nasumi named Amazon Web Services as the number one service operating in the industry in 2012. However, the report stated its reasons for naming Windows Azure as the winner in 2013:

Across three primary tests (performance, scalability and stability), Microsoft emerged as a top performer in every category. Even though Azure has not been in the market as long as S3 and does not have nearly the same volume of storage under management, it is clear that Microsoft’s investments in Azure are starting to pay dividends and that the technology they are providing to the market is second to none.

The report added that Windows Azure had the best Write/Read/Delete speeds compared to the other cloud operators and was the only one that had zero errors during Nasumi's performance test for 100 million reads and writes.
