Rumor: Mac OS X 10.7 ready for launch?

While there are lots of rumors about Apple's portable devices like the iPhone, the iPod line and the iPad that doesn't mean that the company doesn't have other updates up their sleeve. One of them is the long awaited update to its Mac OS X operating system for its Macbooks and Mac lines of notebook and desktop PCs. The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) has posted up word via unnamed sources that the next major update to the Mac OS X is getting close to its public debut.

According to the story, Mac OS X 10.7, code named "Lion" has "gone live for internal Apple testing as recently as last week" if the story's sources are correct. It adds that, "An internal testing release generally indicates that Lion is near to a real world debut." That would seem to suggest that Apple is prepping for "Lion's" public release for its Worldwide Apple Developers Conference which is scheduled to begin one week from today on June 7 in San Francisco.

The "Lion" update, when it is released, will actually be the eighth major update for the Mac OS X operating system. It was first announced last October. The Apple web site has posted up a web page that goes into detail about what features "Lion" will have, including full screen app viewing, a feature called Mission Control that is supposed to give the user "a bird’s-eye view of everything — including Dashboard and full-screen apps — all in one place" , auto saving of your work and more.
