Rumour: Verizon delaying, maybe cancelling Windows Phone 8 devices?

Microsoft want Windows Phone 8 to be a success, but it has got a long way to go before it will reach the dizzy heights of success and adoption rate of Android or iPhone handsets. But rumours have started to circulate that Verizon are having issues with the OS and devices, so much so that cancelling planned devices might not be out of the question.

It all boils down to remote device management. Verizon require its phones to be available for remote access, for provisioning and other services. Apparently Windows Phone 8 devices don’t meet that requirement so Verizon are hesitant in using the devices in their current state.

In rare cases, if remote access is not granted, the devices can stop responding to certain systems on the carrier’s network. It has been suggested Microsoft and Verizon are in talks to resolve the situation, however Microsoft have been said to be unwilling to give any waivers on this issue. There has been no word on what these waivers would include.

With Verizon being the biggest mobile carrier in the US, Microsoft can’t afford to give up any ground in the mobile market, especially with the release of the iPhone 5 and newer Android hardware from HTC and Samsung. It would be a blow to Microsoft if Verizon delayed the launch, but a disaster if they cancelled the deal, and therefore the Windows Phone 8 devices altogether.

Until something more definite is confirmed by either party, we can only but assume this game of cat and mouse will continue to be just what it is now, rumour.
