Samsung and Verizon have confirmed that they will be releasing a 5G smartphone in the United States in the first half of next year. Though no details were provided yet, the companies will show off a proof of concept at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit which takes place this week.
The prototype device will feature Qualcomm's X50 LTE modem for 5G speeds, and it will run on the company's upcoming flagship chipset, which is expected to be the Snapdragon 855.
Samsung isn't the first to announce a 5G smartphone, and Verizon already has another device with 5G on the way in the form of a Moto Mod for the Moto Z3. Other U.S. carriers have also announced 5G smartphones, but they've been just as vague as far as release dates and other details go. The Korean giant is the first one to specifically say it has a proof of concept to show off, though, and with Qualcomm's tech summit starting tomorrow, it's likely the first standalone 5G smartphone we'll see.
Rumors have been swirling about Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphones, and there have been indications that one of the variants of the Galaxy S10 will indeed support 5G. Whether or not that's the device the company is referring to here remains to be seen. It's also still a mystery whether other regions will get to enjoy 5G as soon as the United States, seeing as most of the announcements seem to relate to that country alone.
