Samsung details the Exynos 1080, a 5nm chipset coming to Vivo phones next year

Samsung has formally announced the Exynos 1080 chipset, its next flagship processor for smartphones, at an event in China (via SamMobile). The next-generation chip will be built on the company's own 5nm EUV process, and it promises to be very power efficient.

In terms of performance, the Exynos 1080 has an octa-core CPU, including a single Cortex-A78 core at 2.8GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6GHz, and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. Samsung claims that single-core performance is up to 50% higher, with multi-core performance doubling its previous flagship. Additionally, the GPU has been upgraded to the Mali-G78 MP10. Arm introduced the Mali-G78 earlier this year, and it promises up to 25% better performance than the previous generation. The chipset supports Full HD+ displays at 144Hz, or QHD+ displays at 90Hz.

The neural processing unit (NPU) promises 5.7 trillion operations per second (TOPS), and the image signal processor supports cameras up to 200MP, or dual-camera setups with two 32MP lenses, and up to six cameras in general, along with support for 10-bit and HDR+ video recording. In terms of connectivity, 5G support is obviously included, along with Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6.

Just as it was initially reported last week, Samsung also announced today that the new Exynos 1080 will debut inside a Vivo smartphone early next year. Exynos chipsets have typically been exclusive to Samsung's phones, but Chinese smartphone manufacturers may be looking for alternatives after Huawei has been targeted by the United States government and forbidden from buying products from American companies such as Qualcomm. It remains to be seen if other companies like Xiaomi and OPPO will join the fray.
