Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra could feature dynamic refresh rate switching

With just over three weeks to go for the Galaxy Note20 series launch, more leaks surrounding the device have started surfacing. Previous leaks had pointed to the Galaxy Note20 series offering dynamic refresh rate switching and now leaker @UniverseIce has confirmed that the feature will be present on the Note20 Ultra. He also notes that similar to the Galaxy S20 series, the Note20 Ultra will not have an option to use the 120Hz refresh rate at QHD+ resolution.

On the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, Samsung only offers users an option to manually toggle between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rate at FHD+ resolution. By dynamically switching between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rate, Samsung will be able to deliver better battery life on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra. This is because a high refresh rate panel is only beneficial in selected scenarios and in selected apps.

Do note that dynamic refresh rate is different from variable refresh rate which requires necessary hardware support as well. In dynamic refresh rate, as Samsung is rumored to implement on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, the device will automatically switch between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rate depending on the app that is open. This is different from variable refresh rate which will variably adjust the display refresh rate in real-time depending on the content that is being displayed. Since dynamic refresh rate is purely software-based, Samsung can always bring it to the Galaxy S20 series as well via a software update in the future.

As for the Galaxy Note20 series, Samsung's next Unpacked event is scheduled for August 5 where the company will be unveiling the devices.
