At its Galaxy Unpacked event held earlier today, Samsung has reiterated its commitment to provide ongoing updates for the operating system of its smartphones. To that end, the company has vowed to release major OS updates to its new flagship devices for "up to three generations".
Samsung's devices typically receive two major OS updates and up to three years of monthly security updates. The latest change means that the new Galaxy Note20 phones, for example, are set to be updated through three Android generations in the future. It will also apply to the Galaxy S20 series, which were unveiled in February, and last year's Galaxy S10 family of devices. However, Samsung noted that "availability of feature and security updates may vary by device and country".
For customers using the firm's flagship devices, this new policy could give them assurance that their handsets are up-to-date and protected from threats for at least three years. That being said, things will remain the same for the rest of Samsung's smartphone offerings, such as the Galaxy A lineup, which will continue to be limited to only up to two years of OS updates.
