Samsung has officially taken the wraps off its newest smartwatch, the Gear S3, today in its home country, South Korea.
The Korean tech giant introduced two models for the Gear S3: one is called the 'Gear S3 Frontier,' which features a rugged design, and the 'Gear S3 Classic,' which has a sleek design, like its predecessor, the Gear S2. The two variants feature a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display and 4 GB of storage. The Gear Frontier has LTE connectivity, allowing users to place calls on the device even when their phone isn't nearby.
Moreover, the Gear S3 now has the capability to support Samsung Pay's Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) feature, which utilizes magnetic signals to make mobile payments without the need for a physical payment card.
According to Samsung, the Gear S3's design is inspired by traditional watchmakers. “The immensely intelligent Gear S3 is a testament to our focus on evolving and leading the wearables category and ultimately delivering a smartwatch unlike any other on the market," said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Wearable Business, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.
The Gear S3 also comes with the company's signature circular bezel, which was introduced with the Gear S2. The bezel can be rotated to access menus, zoom through pictures, as well as adjust the volume.
The smartwatch also features swappable bands, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a battery that according to Samsung can last four days on a single charge. Finally, the Gear S3 runs on Tizen OS, and is preloaded with a built-in GPS, as well as the S Health, alti/barometer and Speedometer apps, which helps users track their daily activities.
While the debut was only for South Korea, those in other areas won't have to fear; by next week, on November 18, those in Australia, Dubai, France, Germany, Singapore, UK, and the US can get their hands on the Gear S3, and try it out for themselves.
