Samsung's upcoming standalone VR headset to be called Odyssey

Samsung’s GEAR VR headset is seen as a fairly successful product, but earlier this year, the company announced it was going after Oculus and the HTC Vive, with an upcoming standalone product. Now we know that Samsung’s upcoming VR headset is likely named "Odyssey".

The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are impressive devices, that rely on a nearby, powerful PCs to do many of the processes needed for high-fidelity VR graphics. Meanwhile, devices like the Galaxy Gear VR allow for untethered usage but rely on a smartphone – offering lower quality graphics, inferior motion tracking and so on.

But earlier this this year, Samsung’s head of R&D, Injong Rhee announced that the company was looking at melding the best of both worlds. The company would be developing a new device, that would feature positional tracking and high-quality graphics with the freedom that comes with an untethered device. The company didn’t give much more away, but we might have the name of this upcoming product, which is Odyssey.

Samsung filed to trademark Odyssey and two logos in South Korea recently. One of the logo uses the letters VR, while the item descriptions explain these designs are related to “virtual reality game headsets” and “virtual reality game software”.

We know that Samsung is looking to launch a new Galaxy Gear VR alongside the Note 7 in a couple of weeks. But there’s no exact timeframe on when Samsung might launch its new standalone VR headset, by whichever name it will eventually have. However, the company may look to launch such a device either ahead of the holiday shopping season later this year, or perhaps, alongside next year’s flagship devices. But we’ll likely learn more about the new device as we get closer to those launch windows.
