Skype for content creators now generally available, comes built-in with desktop app

Skype for content creators was made available in preview back in April. The new mode was said to be aimed primarily towards vloggers, streamers, and digital broadcasters. Now, Microsoft has announced that the feature is available for all Skype users with the app's latest version on Windows and Mac.

The content creators capability was first made use of in Skype TX - a 'studio-grade' video calling solution for broadcasters, launched in 2014. In essence, it enables users to seamlessly integrate Skype calls with their content, without having to buy expensive equipment generally required for this task. Furthermore, calls can be edited as well once they've been recorded using apps such as Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Audition.

You can easily enable the feature before your Skype call by clicking Settings, selecting Calling and then Advanced, followed by flicking on the Allow NDI Usage toggle. A banner will then appear, notifying everyone involved in your call that the call is being broadcasted or recorded via NDI.

The feature is supported for one-on-one audio calls up to four-person video calls. It will, however, require an NDI-enabled software to run. The following apps have specifically been noted by Microsoft for this purpose:

  • NewTek TriCaster®
  • Xsplit
  • OBS with NDI plugin
  • Pro presenter
  • Wirecast
  • vMIX
  • Ecamm Live for Mac
  • Ovrstream

Any of the aforementioned software employed by users will help provide direct feeds of all participants of a group video call, making the use of any additional screen recording software unnecessary. Additionally, users will be able to upload their content as a podcast or a vlog, or even live stream it directly to their audiences via popular streaming platforms, such as Facebook or YouTube.

Skype for content creators is now available with the latest version of Skype for Desktop. You can learn more about it here.
