Skype update now supports multitasking on iOS 9

Split View with Skype on iPad

Microsoft has updated its Skype apps on iOS, now with integration of iOS 9's new multitasking features on iPad. With Slide Over and Split View, Skype users no longer have to leave the app they have open to continue a conversation.

"Imagine you’re planning a night out in London with a group of friends using IM or a group voice call. Now you can share links to bars and restaurants and decide on the best place to meet without having to leave the app, just click on the shared content and bring it alongside your Skype conversation."

Slide Over and Split View work similarly. Slide Over pops open a temporary window that looks much like a stretched iPhone window. By swiping from the right of the iPad screen, you can interact with the Skype app and swipe it away when you're finished. Split View offers a fixed solution. It simply allows two apps to run at the same time, with an aspect ratio of either 50:50 or 66:33 (pictured above).

Also new in the update, you can now reply to Skype messages without opening the app. Notifications can be directly responded to in the lock screen on both iPhone and iPad.

Finally, conversations can be directly started by searching for a contact in Spotlight. If the contact is linked with Skype, you'll be able to start a conversation without first having to open the app.
