Sony's PlayStation 4 has a been a huge sales success so far, with more than ten million of its latest consoles being sold worldwide. The PS4 has been a big hit in the United Kingdom - in this one market alone, Sony has confirmed that it has now sold one million units.
Fergal Gara, managing director of Sony UK & Ireland, told Eurogamer.net that the PS4 passed that milestone after just nine months on sale, confirming that the number relates specifically to sales to customers, rather than shipments to retailers. That makes it the second fastest-selling console ever in the UK - only the Nintendo Wii managed to reach a million sales faster, taking just 38 weeks to do so.
The PlayStation 3 took 46 weeks to get to a million sales, just behind the PS2's 50 weeks, and comfortably ahead of the 60 weeks that it took for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the UK.
Gara said that sales of the PS4 in the UK were "significantly" higher than the company had expected, adding that it is expecting more strong sales during the all-important holiday season.
The PS4 continues to outsell its Xbox One rival - perhaps by as much as three-to-one worldwide. In the UK, Eurogamer says it understands that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One by around 3:2, suggesting that Microsoft has sold roughly 600,000 to 700,000 units there.
