There's been a lot of talk lately about Sony creating smartphones based on Windows Phone. One rumor claimed that Sony was going to launch a line of smartphones using Windows Phone 8, code named Apollo, in the fall of 2012. A few days ago, a prototype development phone made by Sony Ericsson found its way briefly on eBay.
However, officially Sony seems to be telling members of the press something completely different. PhoneArena.com reports that it met with Stephen Sneeden, Sony's Product Marketing Manager for the company's Xperia line, at the Mobile World Congress trade show a couple of weeks ago. The report, using Sneeden's statements, claims that while Sony is open to working with Microsoft on a Windows Phone product, there are no specific plans to do so at this time.
The article makes it sound like Sony is waiting to see if other Windows Phone products from the likes of Nokia, HTC and others start to make an impact on the overall smartphone marketplace before Sony makes a move. It also points out that Sony's overall financial situation isn't all that great at the moment which may make the company even more cautious on launching products using a still unproven mobile OS.
