There's no question that many people prefer keeping their data on their own physical hardware instead of trusting other companies to keep it safe. While there's a certain convenience of saving to the cloud, NAS companies have come a long way in simplifying the configuration so that users can not only consume data stored on the devices in their own home, but also stream it to the Internet.
Today Synology has announced two new products to help solve your storage woes. The first, pictured above, is the DS1515. It's a 5-bay device that sports an Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-314 Quad Core 1.4GHz processor. Annapurna Labs is a relatively unknown CPU manufacturer out of Israel, and unfortunately they do not publish their processor spec sheets so it will be interesting to see how well this NAS device performs. The DS1515 also has four gigabit Ethernet ports that support link aggregation to both increase performance and provide fault tolerance. The company claims that the device can deliver read and write speeds over 400 MB/s. In addition, the DS1515 includes hardware encryption that still allows read speeds of nearly 300 MB/s and write speeds of 150 MB/s.
If you prefer a rack-mounted system, Synology has announced the RS815. Holding up to four drives, the device is only 12 inches deep and can hold up to 48TB of storage. A feature unique to the RS815 is that of server redundancy when setting up more than one device. According to Synology, when configured in high availability mode, the loss of a single RS815 will be undetectable by a client.
Both devices will run the DSM 5.1 operating system which, from our previous reviews, is both powerful and easy to use. The MSRP for the DS1515 is $649.99; and the RS815 is $599.99.
