The latest update to the Surface app for Windows has added greater flexibility in customizing the functionality offered by its Surface Pen, including the ability to change the action taken when the stylus' top button is pressed. With the app, it is now possible to change what happens when a user inputs various sequences of button presses. The user interface has also seen some minor tweaks, to better suit Windows 10's visual style.
The app's latest release (version 10.0.342.0) has placed the options into the pen settings tab, but its rollout appears to be somewhat random. Some users are now able to access the options, but others are still yet to see any change applied after updating the app. The options should be located below the settings for pen sensitivity.
By default, pressing the pen button will open Microsoft OneNote; a double-click will take a screenshot; and holding the button will open digital personal assistant 'Cortana'. These can now be fine-tuned to your preference, to launch both desktop and Windows Store applications, access features, or execute more in-depth commands.
This will please a large number of those who are yet to use Microsoft’s OneNote application, and will free up one button sequence to be bound to another action. All three button sequences offered by the pen can now be customized.
