Last month, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, the long-awaited successor to its first wearable processor, the Snapdragon Wear 2100. Montblanc is the first OEM out of the gate with a device powered by the new SoC, introducing the Summit 2 today.
The smartwatch starts at $995, and since it's the first of its kind, we don't have anything to compare the price to. Montblanc is a premium brand, so it's probably safe to say that there will be more inexpensive options from other companies. The original Summit was similarly priced.
Alongside of the new chipset, the Summit 2 comes with a 1.2-inch circular 390x390 AMOLED display, a 340mAh battery, 8GB of onboard storage, and 1GB RAM. It's made of stainless steel or titanium, and it's water resistant up to 50 meters. It's still 14.3mm thick, which converts to about 0.56 inches.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset in itself is notable though, as it uses what Qualcomm calls big-small-tiny architecture. Basically, it's big.LITTLE but scaled down for wearables. That means that things like an ambient display won't suck down power, as there's now a custom-designed "tiny" component that uses minimal power for tasks that don't need a lot of it.
Montblanc is providing a variety of models to choose from, as you can choose from stainless steel, black stainless steel, or titanium, and you can choose from leather or nylon bands. The top end model is called the Milanese Edition, and that will run you $1,230.
