The Official Statement

Since there seems to be a lot of talk about the downtime, I thought I would make a statement.

On the day that Neowin was moved, Neowin was hacked earlier in the afternoon, then again later in the day. This is not the first time this has happened. It was determined that Neowin needed to move immediately. A server was made available for Neowin to move into a couple of weeks prior. They were working on new code and were going to launch the new site on the new server. However, the hack attempts were affecting the entire server and other sites...it could not continue in this way any longer.

So the move process was began. However there is two important thing that was left out of the drama that has been talked about on this site. One, this was NOT a planned move and two, Neowin was being move and hacked at the same time. Dealing with hackers is not fun and it is especially irritating when attempting to move a site.

Oh, I forgot to mention that all this happened while I was out of town...I am dealing with this with a cell phone and a notebook computer. I was suppose to be in New York enjoying the Michael Jackson concert and enjoying the weekend. Instead, I spent most of the concert on the phone and cut my trip two days short. While the site was down yesterday (explanation below) I personally babysat it, since for me, I could see it the whole entire time.

Now there are some issues that I specifically want to address:

1) Neowin was transferred live and we ultimately had to take it offline. This was NOT a planned moved, this was something that came up unexpectedly due to unforeseen circumstances.

2) I read the "I can move a database better than you" thread. To be honest, I cracked up laughing. I have released SOME of the details concerning the move but there are more. They are not being released (unless Neobond wants to release them) because quite frankly it is none of anyone's business. The speculation in this thread on what happened and how they could solve it better is not only immature, it is laughable.

There were some people who could not reach the site yesterday. This was due to ISPs needing to resolve to the new IP that Neowin has. I apologize for that, but again, this was not a planned move.

HostTyme stands behind Neowin 100%. I hand-picked Neowin to host and I have no regrets about this decision.

I also want to publicly thank everyone who helped with the move. It was a joint effort and I want them to know how much I appreciate their help.
