With The Settlers series now being 25 years old, Ubisoft had a couple of surprising announcements to make regarding the city-building RTS series during gamescom today. A brand new beginning to the franchise as well as a remastered collection of all the previous games are incoming.
Simply titled The Settlers, the new reboot is being built on Ubisoft's Snowdrop game engine, the same one that powers The Division series. According to the new announcement page, the game will feature a "fresh take on the familiar gameplay mechanics," and will also support head-to-head multiplayer, as well as cooperative play for the campaign and side-missions.
The setting is described as follows:
Forced to leave their homelands after a devastating earthquake of mysterious origins, the Settlers set sail towards the unknown in the hopes of finding a new home. Not only will they face countless new challenges, they will also become part of an ancient mystery that will change their lives forever
Meanwhile, the newly announced The Settlers History Collection will include all seven games from the main series, arriving with all expansions and revamped features for modern systems. The very first of these remastered games is already available via Uplay today, that being the original Settlers from 1993.
The Settlers is scheduled for launch in autumn 2019, while nostalgic fans can get their hands on The Settlers History Collection on November 15 later this year. Series regular studio Blue Byte of Ubisoft is once again helming the development of both projects, while also working on a new industrial era-set Anno game.
