In an attempt to make the app more accessible, TikTok announced today that it is introducing auto captions, which would automatically generate subtitles so users can read or listen to the content that they're viewing.
The option will be available to creators on the editing page after a video has been uploaded or recorded. They also have the option to edit the text of the auto-generated subtitles in case they need some fine-tuning. Users will have the option to disable subtitles. To do so, they need to open the share panel and toggle the captions button.
Initially, the feature will be made available in American English and Japanese, and support for other languages will be added in the coming months. The firm stated that this is not the first feature that it has introduced to increase the app's accessibility. Other features include an animated thumbnail, a prompt that warns creators that their videos with effects could trigger photosensitive epilepsy, and a text-to-speech feature.
TikTok has been continually adding new features to the app, which include the introduction of capabilities to promote "kindness" on the platform last month. One feature lets creators filter comments and the other one warns users in a pop-up prompt to rethink their "inappropriate or unkind" comments.
