Twitter celebrates six years with 340 million tweets a day

It's hard to imagine a world without Twitter. However, six years ago today the social networking service had just launched. On the occasion of the company's sixth anniversary, the company updated its blog with some more statistics showing just how many people use Twitter every day.

Many people didn't know what to make of Twitter at first. After all, how much could one express of oneself with messages of just 140 characters or less each? As it turned out, there was a much bigger audience for such a service than anyone could have imagined. Twitter's blog post today said:

And at last check, there are more than 140 million active users (there’s that number again) — and today we see 340 million Tweets a day. That’s more than 1 billion every 3 days.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said in September that the service had 100 million active daily users, which means that Twitter has expanded by at least another 40 million users in just six months. Costolo also said in October that the service generated 250 million "tweet" messages a day, again showing that the growth of Twitter continues to accelerate.

The company launched a new interface for both its web and mobile customers in December, which got mixed reviews at first but hasn't kept people from continuing to use the service.
