Virgin Media has announced that mobile customers can now make calls and send texts when there’s no mobile signal using a feature called Wi-Fi Calling. Virgin Media said that the feature comes at no extra cost and usage is deducted from customers’ monthly airtime allowance, rather than their data allowance.
According to the company, Wi-Fi Calling doesn’t require any special apps to work but can be enabled directly in the settings. It said that the recipient doesn’t need to be a Virgin Media customer, nor do they need a certain app installed to receive messages or calls from you. If you’re running an older operating system that doesn’t have built-in Wi-Fi Calling support, specific apps may be able to provide this functionality.
With people being told to stay home, remaining connected to friends and family, with technology, has become very important. By rolling out Wi-Fi Calling, those located in rural areas, where connectivity can be patchy, will be able to keep in touch with others.
Now that the feature has been rolled out, Virgin Media customers need to ensure Wi-Fi Calling is enabled to take advantage of it. On iOS, head to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling. On Android, the Settings menu varies by device so use the search feature to look for Wi-Fi Calling and make sure it’s enabled.
