Verdun and Defense Grid: The Awakening are free on the Epic Games Store

It is freebie time again on the Epic Games Store, and as replacements for last week's Obduction and Offworld Trading Company giveaways, Verdun and Defense Grid: The Awakening (a returning giveaway) have now come in. The store has just kicked off its summer sale as well, offering discounts of up to 75% off its wares.

Defense Grid: The Awakening offers a tower defense strategy experience that has hordes of aliens attempting to swipe the player's power cores. There are 10 tower variants with three upgrades each in the player's arsenal, and their placements are the key to victory. Here's how the store describes it:

Defense Grid: The Awakening is the ultimate tower defense game that appeals to players of all skill levels. A horde of enemies is invading, and it's up to the player to stop them by strategically building fortification towers around their base. The controls are intuitive and the gameplay is deep — the special attacks and properties of each tower work together to provide many ways to succeed.

Verdun, the title occupying the giveaway's second slot, is a World War I-set first-person shooter with a focus on authenticity. It focuses on the battles in the Western Front between 1914 and 1918. The title offers both 64-player PVP action, both team-based and free for all, as well as cooperative modes. The Epic Games Store describes it as follows:

Merciless trench warfare immerses you and your squad in intense battles of attack and defense. Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in an authentic World War One setting offering a rarely seen battlefield experience.

Below are the minimum requirements for both games. Keep in mind Verdun also includes a Linux version on Steam, where it is currently priced $19.99, which is not being offered on the Epic Games Store.
