Verizon is in the process of deploying a 100G network backbone over a 555 mile route between Paris and Frankfurt. Though 100G networks have been deployed in test environments, Verizon is looking to be the first to commercially deploy a 100G network.
The backbone between the two cities will implement routing technology developed by Juniper and optical transport technology developed by Ciena. A Verizon spokesperson told InformationWeek that this 100G backbone is setting the stage for more 100G deployments in the future. Ihab Tarazi, Verizon’s vice president of global planning, said:
The continuing deployment of 100G technology is critical to support the traffic growth in the Verizon IP network driven by the emerging demand for wireless and video applications.
A spokesperson for Ciena said that their acquisition of Nortel Networks made it possible for them to develop the technology needed to achieve 100G. Verizon chose Juniper because their routers are the only ones that support a standards based 100G IP/MPLS interface.
While Verizon is working hard to enhance their network backbone in Europe their wireless network is getting an upgrade in the USA. Verizon has been working hard to deploy LTE in 38 cities by the end of the year. Verizon says their new 4G LTE network should deliver speeds from 5-12Mb/s.
