Visual voicemail coming to Windows Phone

As we previously covered here at Neowin.net, Microsoft have stated that one of the 500 features coming to the Windows Phone platform with the Mango update, is visual voicemail. The feature, allows the user to visually see messages that people have recorded and has numerous options available that previously could only be done by telephoning a specific service.

The video which is from pocketnow.com is a walkthrough of the functionality which can be found by tapping the phone tile, with the voicemail 'pivot' being selectable from the options at the top. Long time users will notice that the voicemail option which was previously located at the bottom of the phone screen, is no longer there.

The idea of having visual voicemail available as an option is nothing new when comparing it to what other phone operating systems have to offer. The feature is already available on the iPhone and applications are available for use on Google's Android phones. It's no surprise therefore that Microsoft are adding the ability in order to level out the playing field with the competition.

While visual voicemail by itself is not a spectacular feature, it does show how much effort Microsoft is putting into making Mango a significant update for phone users. Along with this new feature, we'll be seeing other useful updates such as Internet Explorer 9, live tiles on the dashboard and the ability to have more than one calendar (including Facebook events).
