Following news earlier this month that China is working on a censored version of its search engine for the Chinese market, new business registration filings reveal that Waymo has set up a subsidiary in Shanghai called Huimo Business Consulting (Shanghai). The business was registered on May 22 in Shangai’s free trade zone with registered capital of 3.5 million yuan ($509,165).
The document which is stored in China’s National Enterprise Information Publicity System, says that the scope of the business includes business matters and logistics consultancy. Additionally, the firm is responsible for design and test of self-driving car parts. The document lists the firm’s legal representative as Kevin Bradley Vosen. The development was confirmed by Waymo today and stated that people are already working there.
Waymo’s move into China comes just months after the country issued licenses to several car manufacturers, including SAIC Motor Corp Ltd, and NIO, to test autonomous vehicles on the roads of Shanghai. The country’s push aims to help it keep pace with the United States in the race to develop self-driving vehicles for public consumption.
In addition to Waymo’s expansion, Google has recently joined an investment in Chushou, a live-streaming mobile game platform, and it also launched an AI game on Tencent’s WeChat app.
