Remember the BeBox? It was 1995 when we first got a glimpse of this computer, which was going to revolutionize the PC industry -- and it took only six years for it to disappear into oblivion. In 1997, Be, Inc. ceased manufacturing the Power PCs for which the operating system initially had been created.
Then, in 2001, the developers of BeOS, having run out of money, sold the rights to the operating system to Palm, where it languishes today. But is BeOS truly dead, or is it just lying dormant, waiting to rise again like a phoenix?
A quick search of the Web reveals that tons of Be devotees are still writing code for the operating system. And rumors have begun to circulate that BeOS could be incorporated into Palm 6, which is set to debut sometime next year.
Although those rumors may not prove to be true -- it is more likely that only some of the Be architecture will become part of the new Palm OS -- Be enthusiasts can still find new applications in cyberspace at such sites as the BeBoxZone.
