Windows 8 is slowly but sure gaining market share on PC's worldwide, but the latest numbers from research firm Net Applications shows that Windows 7 also managed to be installed and used on more hard drives as well.
Net Applications's website shows that worldwide, Windows 8 was installed on 4.27 percent of all PCs in May, compared to 3.84 percent in April. For the first time since Windows 8 was launched, Net Applications's numbers for the OS are not fragmented into three sections (Windows 8, Windows 8 Touch and Windows RT Touch) which makes checking their data a little easier.
Windows 7 still leads the PC operating system pack. In May, it was installed on 44.85 percent of all PCs, according to Net Applications, and that's up slightly compared to 44.72 percent of PCs in April. Windows XP, now less than a year away from its support cut off date, was installed on 37.74 percent of PCs in May, down from 38.31 percent in April. It seems clear that Windows XP will still be used by quite a few PCs when Microsoft's support deadline of April 8th, 2014 arrives.
Windows Vista's market share keeps going down, but for the moment it is still ahead of Windows 8. Net Applications claims that in May it was installed on 4.51 percent of PCs worldwide, down from 4.79 percent in April.
