Earlier this month, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all confirmed they would offer smartphones for sale based on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 OS later this fall. This week, US Cellular, the fifth biggest wireless carrier in the US, has also joined the ranks in supporting Windows Phone 8 devices.
In a statement sent to PCMag.com US Cellular states, "We believe in giving our customers the latest technology and device options and we are excited about the Windows 8 phone. It will be an important part of our device lineup going forward."
This show of support means that when Windows Phone 8 devices launch this fall, they should be available more widely in the US than when Windows Phone 7.5 launched in 2011, when only AT&T and T-Mobile had devices for sale. (Verizon and Sprint had Windows Phone 7 devices in 2010 but declined to offer Windows Phone 7.5 devices last year).
The announcement of US Cellular's approval means that Sprint is the biggest holdout in terms of their official Windows Phone 8 involvement. Sprint has hinted in the past they might offer a Windows Phone 8-based product but so far they have yet to officially announce any plans to do so.
