Windows Phone stats from Kantar show a drop in market share

Kantar has released its quarterly stats for the mobile phone segment and for Windows Phone fans, the news is not good. While Windows Phone still holds firmly in third position in the market, its share has dropped in Europe and the US.

For a three month period ending in September, Windows Phone in the US dropped from 4.6% to 4.3% on a year over year basis and in Europe, the share dropped from 9.5% to 9.2% during the same time period.

Despite the year over year losses for Windows Phone, it does not all appear to be bad news. For example, in the US, the share is up from the year low which occurred in May with 3.8%. Although, it is down from last month where Windows Phone had 4.7% of the market in the US.

In the individual markets in Europe, Windows has shown growth with Italy leading the charge at 15.2% of the market which is up from the previous month at 14.4% and is also up on a yearly basis from 13.7%.

Great Britain has shown a drop in Windows Phone market share and had 9.6% at the end of September which is down from the prior month at 10.3% and yearly down from 11.4%.

Overall, it looks like it was a tough year for Windows Phone, and Kantar puts a lot of the shrinkage on the shoulders of the iPhone 6 which was met with strong demand. With new phones out ahead of the holiday season, we will be curious to see if Windows Phone can grow any during the holiday shopping season.
