Xiaomi announces the Mi MIX 3 5G edition at MWC 2019

At the Mobile World Congress 2019 today, Xiaomi unveiled the 5G edition of its Mi MIX 3 flagship device, which was originally announced in October 2018 in China. The company's Director of Product Management, Donovan Sung, was on stage to demonstrate the video-calling capability of the 5G-powered device over Orange's network.

Along with the live demo, Sung also revealed some changes to the phone's internals to accommodate the 5G network. The new handset is now powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with an X50 modem, an upgrade from the original edition's Snapdragon 845 chipset.

That said, the slider phone retains the rest of its original specs, including a 6.39-inch AMOLED FHD+ display with a 2340x1080 resolution and a dual camera on the back comprising a 12MP wide-angle lens and a 12MP telephoto lens. On the magnetic slider sits a 24MP+2MP front camera.

With regard to its 5G capabilities, Sung claimed that the Mi Mix 3 can achieve more than 2Gbps of peak downlink speed. That means the device is supposed to be able to download a 15-minute long 1080p video coming in at 256MB within just one second over a 5G network.

Xiaomi will be teaming up with a number of network carriers such as Orange to roll out the Mi Mix 3 5G edition in Europe beginning in May, which is nearly the same time as the Galaxy S10 5G model's release in the region. The handset will be available in Onyx Black and Sapphire Blue, starting at €599.
