Xiaomi's 40W wireless charging tech can charge a 4,000mAh battery in 40 mins

Xiaomi today showcased the world's first 40W fast wireless charging technology for smartphones. The company claims that its wireless charging solution can charge a 4,000mAh battery in 40 minutes or to 50% in just 20 minutes. The company posted a video showcasing the speed of its 40W wireless charging solution. These charging times make Xiaomi's wireless charging technology faster than almost all wired charging solutions for smartphones out there.

So far, we have seen smartphones with 40W, 50W, and even 65W wired fast charging technology, but none of them have featured such fast wireless charging speeds. Vivo did announce the Apex 2020 last week with 60W wireless charging but that was a concept device and it did not post any video showcasing the tech. Xiaomi's own Mi 10 Pro currently has the fastest wireless charging speeds out there in a smartphone at 30W.

It is unlikely that we are going to see Xiaomi's 40W wireless charging solution make its debut inside one of its phones though. The company has previously demoed 100W wired fast charging solution but never got around to releasing it. In fact, Vivo also demoed a 120W charging solution last year but it is yet to release a device with this technology.

Such fast wireless or wired charging solutions come with plenty of issues. Apart from the massive amount of heat generated, passing a huge amount of power to the battery in such a short time can shorten its lifespan considerably.
