Yahoo Mail hit with downtime, ironic timing [Update ...back online]

While Microsoft was launching a new web email service, Outlook.com, to the public today, another one of the big three web email companies was experiencing some technical problems of its own. A large number of users of the Yahoo Mail and Messenger services have reported that they have been unable to log into their accounts or have experienced performance problems today.

News.com reports that they have received a statement from Yahoo which says:

Yahoo! Mail, Messenger and other areas of Yahoo may currently be inaccessible or slow to respond to some users in certain locations. We are working to correct the issue and restore all functionality immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might be affected.

So far there's no word on what's causing the problems or when they will be corrected.

Comscore recently claimed that Yahoo Mail has about 298 million users. Google said in June that Gmail now has 425 million users, but that number has yet to be independently verified. Microsoft's Hotmail.com reportedly has 325 million users, according to Comscore. Hotmail.com users will get to keep their domain name but Microsoft plans to put its newly launched Outlook.com UI on all of its email domain services.

Update: Yahoo Mail and Messenger seem to be back up.
